The Only New Year’s Resolution You’ll Ever Need

Simple New Year's Resolution Ideas

Simple New Year’s Resolution Ideas

There are countless New Year’s resolution ideas on the internet. With a quick search, you can easily find thousands of goals to set for yourself in the New Year. Some are incredibly healthy ideas like losing weight, eating whole foods, drinking more water, getting better sleep, and exercising more. Some ideas are good for you financially like saving more, spending less, paying off debt, and investing more in your retirement accounts. And some are all about looking better by getting your nails done, buying a nicer wardrobe, and getting wrinkle treatments. Seriously, you could never run out of New Year’s Resolution ideas if you were so inclined.

So what is the point of setting a New Year’s resolution? Should you even do it in the first place?

As always, my advice is simple. If setting a New Year’s resolution makes you happy, then go for it. But if it does not increase your happiness, then don’t feel obligated to set one at all. It is entirely up to you. No one should feel pressured to do anything in life, just because it seems like everyone around you is doing it.

And if you choose to go for it, then keep this in mind.

Living Your Best Life

Living your best life is really the only New Year’s resolution you need. Not the life your parents want for you, not the life your partner wants for you, and certainly not the life your boss wants for you. This is your life. You get to choose what is best for you.

While reading more books is a great resolution to set for someone who loves reading already, it may not have any appeal for you. That is perfectly okay. If you find your happiness listening to podcasts, reading comic books, or watching great films, go for it. Books may not be your thing. And I’m an English teacher, so if I say it’s okay, then take my word for it.

The real goal is that you are constantly learning new information and life lessons, so it really does not matter how this happens to you. Remember, live your best life.

And don’t get me started on what seems like the most popular New Year’s resolution throughout history: losing weight. After six months of working full-time, living in two cities while flipping a house, raising two kids as a single mom, and running a blog and several social media accounts, I have gained a lot of weight. I am seriously chubby right now. But I have zero intention of setting a weight loss goal for myself because that will just lead me to stress out and feel bad about myself every single day. Instead, I am going to focus on living my best life, taking better care of myself, and being more active now that our house flip is done and my partner has finally moved in.

We all need to take care of our bodies and minds, but that does not mean that we need to set unobtainable goals for ourselves. Just focus on making healthy choices daily and prioritizing self-care.

And if you love the feeling of checking items off a to-do list like I do, set small, obtainable goals that encourage you to continue your journey to better health and feel good about yourself.

Yay! Look at me. I drank water today so I get a smiley face. That feels so much better than getting a frowny face because I didn’t lose fifteen pounds in one week.

So what about saving more, spending less, paying off debt, and investing more in your future? Of course, I think you should do all of those things. If you have read any of my personal finance posts, you know how important I think taking control of your money and obtaining financial freedom is.

Every year in December, I set several money goals for myself including a balance goal for each of my accounts and a net worth goal for the following year. The difference is once I set the goal, I automate the savings I need to reach it, and then I forget all about it until I check again in December. I don’t obsess over it daily, and I don’t feel bad about myself every time an unexpected bill comes up.

Paying yourself first and automating savings makes living your best financial life easy. No grand gesture of making a resolution necessary (unless you want to, then go for it). Set it and forget it. By the end of the year, your financial picture will look much better than if you always pay yourself whatever is left over.

Lastly, should you set a resolution related to looking better? Well, that’s up to you too. Do you want to look better for yourself? Will it increase your happiness and confidence? If yes, then go for it. Everyone deserves to look amazing and feel hot. You do you.

But if you are only concerned about looking better for others, then maybe you should rethink that goal. I say this especially if you are trying to attract someone who doesn’t seem to notice you at all or who is hot and cold about being interested in you. People either want to be in your life or they don’t. Buying new clothes, getting plastic surgery, and constantly tanning are not going to change that.

Plenty of people in the world are attracted to me and plenty of people are definitely not. And that is okay with me. I feel good about myself and my partner is happy with how I look. Win-win.

Choose to see the attractive features in yourself and allow yourself to feel good. I guarantee you that people will be more attracted to you when you are happy, confident, and accepting of yourself.

Choose Happiness

The whole point of setting a New Year’s resolution is to become a better version of yourself. And the best version of you is a happy you. So whether you choose to set a resolution or not, choose happiness for this coming year and for every year after that.

Live your best life. Live on your terms. Be who you want to be. Happiness is sure to follow.

  • I really really love this post. It’s so important that we get to live the life we want not what someone else wants for us and I agree with you in choosing happiness. I love the last lines as well. Thanks for sharing.

  • Resolutions often lead to a sense of failure which none of us need. I love the idea of the only commitment for the near year is putting yourself first and doing what works for you. It’s easy to get swayed by what other people are setting their goals as but if it doesn’t work for you then what is the point!?

  • I couldn’t agree with your post more! We should all focus on living our best lives for ourselves, nobody else. We have to live with the consequences of our own actions and nobody else does.

  • Amazing positive post, that we should live by every day of our lives. That’s what I always tell my friend, my goal is just to live life happy and be the best version of myself. Happy New Year!

  • Self care is so important! Lovely thoughts and great focus 🙂 I would love to see everyone striving to be their best self and believing in who they are <3

  • Every sentence in this post resonates with me on every level. Choose happiness is such a powerful statement that more of us should keep in mind daily. Loved the financial tip too. Thank you for this beautiful message.
    Happy new year.

    • I’m so glad you enjoyed it. I truly believe we should live the lives that bring us the most joy. Happy New Year to you too.
